Beating the Bounds
St Mary's held a service of Beating the Bounds which is an annual tradition dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. It is a way of marking the boundary lines of Church parishes,
affirming parish boundaries and passing on this knowledge to younger generations. Parishioners would walk around the boundary and beat the parish markers with sticks of willow because willow is associated
with new life ,fertility and immortality.
